About the role

The Intake Officer coordinates the initial entry process for children and young people referred to LWB Foster Care programs. The position also mentors and coaches Foster Carers to ensure every Carer has an opportunity to develop in their caring role, has adequate support and the necessary skills to meet Carer competencies and the needs of children in care.  This is a permanent position with a flexible work base anywhere within the Victoria region. Travel is required within this region. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor, document, and respond to client referrals from the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, and ensure any necessary complementary LWB documentation is also completed
  • Liaise with relevant internal and external stakeholders regarding immediate response and planned services to assist in identifying suitable placements
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary area team to identify, understand and address impacts of trauma on children and young people
  • Ensure all work is guided by the CARE therapeutic framework and relevant legislative and policy requirements
  • Work in partnership with Foster Carers to ensure they can provide trauma-informed care for children, whilst they are given opportunities to expand on skills and learning. This includes through formal supervision and informal check ins, including home visits
  • Complete Carer accreditation reviews as required
  • Ensure appropriate program documentation and administration across LWB and Departmental systems and databases
  • Communicate and act in ways that are consistent with Life Without Barriers Values of Responsive, Imaginative, Courageous, Respectful and Relationships
  • Comply with all Life Without Barriers policy, code of conduct, procedures and practices, external funding body requirements and legislation.

Skills & Experience

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree. The preferred minimum qualifications are Bachelor of Social Work, Social Welfare, Psychology, Nursing and Mental Health. (Note: A qualification is desirable but not essential for Aboriginal staff with appropriate experience and willingness to undertake further training.)
  • A current driver’s licence
  • Registration to deliver Shared Lives Victoria training is desirable.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in a Foster Carer support, assessment or training role is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • High level organisation and time management skills, which includes the ability to prioritise workload to meet changing demands.
  • Demonstrated skills in using client information data bases and recording systems.
  • High level written and oral communication, interpersonal, liaison, negotiation and customer service skills.
  • Ability to manage sensitive information and maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to use initiative in the workplace and demonstrate a high level of autonomy and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to provide quality supervision and coaching to carers in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability in using Microsoft Office suite programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Successful candidates will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check and Working with Children Check (where relevant to the role).
