About the Role 
We are currently seeking Peer Support Workers (PSW) and Community Rehabilitation Support Workers (CRSW) to join our Non-Acute Psychosocial Support program and our Intensive Crisis Support programs.  Full time, permanent and maximum term positions are available.

The successful candidates will provide human rights based and recovery-orientated psychosocial support to individuals who have not evaluated their eligibility or have been declared ineligible for National Disability Insurance Scheme services. These services are delivered throughout the Northern, Central Adelaide and Southern Metro regions.  Experience and knowledge of service provision and available resources in this area is highly desirable. Support services include home based outreach and connection of clients with their local community. 

A Certificate IV Mental Health Peer Work and previous experience supporting adults with mental illness, at varying stages of recovery, using strength-based approaches are a requirement of these roles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draw on lived experience to engage with participants who are accessing Life Without Barriers Mental Health services and who are experiencing mental illness and other complex needs.
  • Support participants to understand their needs and to help them identify challenges and areas of improvement. Encourage participants to work towards their goals by sharing stories of resilience and hope based on your own lived experience.
  • Support clients to develop their own support plans in partnership with Life Without Barriers, Community Mental Health services and Carers.
  • Collaborate with clients, community, and support agencies such as mental health and housing for integrated and timely services.
  • Monitor and review client’s health, family and cultural progress against their plan and provide up to date progress reports to the partner organisations
  • Provide personalised active supports by:
    • Assisting in establishing daily routines and structures.
    • Helping to create and a sustainable and suitable housing environment where it may be lacking.
    • Coaching and guiding the people we support in day-to-day life skills such as cleaning, cooking, shopping, managing finances etc.
    • Encourage positive relationships with parents, family members, community, and other persons significant to the client.
    • Participating and advocating involvement in educational, vocational, and recreational programs that support practical living skills and community reintegration.

Skills & Experience

  • Must hold a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work
  • Lived or living experience of mental health challenges and a willingness to draw on these experiences when supporting others
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people from Diverse Cultural Backgrounds with specific reference to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Demonstrated ability to positively engage, interact and work with people who have complex needs including psychosocial disability
  • Possess a thorough knowledge and understanding of Mental Health supports, including a comprehensive grasp of the Recovery Framework and its underlying principles.
  • Hold a current Australian Drivers Licence, reliable vehicle and the willingness to use own vehicle in the transport of clients as required.
