Role: Therapeutic Specialist – Child, Youth & Family

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Therapeutic Specialist to join our Tasmanian Child, Youth & Family (Tas CYF) services. In this pivotal role, you will work alongside practitioners, leadership and teams to strengthen therapeutic approaches across programs including Family‑Based Care, Residential Care, Mentoring and Placement Preservation. Reporting to the Senior Practice Lead, and drawing on the CARE Theory of Change and CARE/TCI frameworks you will play a key role in embedding high-quality, trauma-informed, and evidence-based approaches. Leading through influence you will collaborate with teams to elevate practice and improve outcomes for children, young people and carers in Out of Home Care.
Key areas of focus include:
- Provide case consultation and therapeutic input to strengthen developmental healing, support safe and nurturing relationships, and promote the wellbeing of children and young people.
- Build capability in carers and staff through reflective conversations, coaching, and case‑based learning.
- Facilitate training and reflective forums to deepen understanding of trauma, attachment and development, supporting consistent use of CARE and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) in everyday care.
- Lead Communities of Practice and contribute to a positive, learning‑focused practice culture across programs.
- Partner with the Tasmanian leadership team to strengthen service quality and embed best practice.
This is a Permanent Full-Time position, primarily based in Burnie (North/North-West TAS), with flexibility to work from both office and home environments to support work-life balance. Please note, this role supports children, young people and carers by building the capability of staff through coaching and training. Regular travel is required, so the successful applicant must be comfortable travelling.
Skills & Experience
- Tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Mental Health Nursing or other related qualification. Plus current registration or eligibility for registration with the professional body relevant to your qualification.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, with experience coaching staff or carers in trauma‑informed approaches and responses to pain‑based behaviours desirable.
- Strong understanding of child and adolescent development and the impacts of trauma, abuse and neglect.
- Effective time management, organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to use initiative and think laterally and strategically as well as well-developed problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, as well as commitment to the principles of EEO, Safety, Cultural Diversity and Ethical Practice.
- Current Full Unrestricted Driver’s Licence.
Successful candidates will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check and Working with Vulnerable People check
